National Literacy and Numeracy Week

The College celebrated Literacy and Numeracy Week and Children's Book Week in late August. The theme for 2015 was 'Books Light up our World' and students were encouraged via displays in the Information Resource Centre  (IRC) to light up their world through reading. Throughout the week students were invited to participate in guessing competitions such as 'guess the silhouette', 'name the book cover' and a twenty question competition based on locations around the world. MSB student authors from the ‘Write a Book in a Day’ activity held readings each lunchtime in the IRC and everyone enjoyed the 'Random Acts of Maths' and Homeroom numeracy quizzes!

The College welcomed two authors. Award winning writer for young adults, Claire Zorn visited the College. The winner of the 2015 CBCA Book of the Year (older readers) ran a number of creative writing workshops with Year 9 and lunched with four MSB students who were selected from a College run creative writing competition. Author Jennifer Walsh spoke with Year 7 students about her writing, concentrating on some of the books she has written where the history of Australia has been woven into the stories and the research that she must undertake for this to occur.

The annual College Celebration Lunch involved over 70 students and celebrated the great culture of reading in the MSB community. Awards presented included the Principal's Reading Challenge recipients, Best Borrowers of 2015 for each Year group, IRC Celebrity Status Award recipients, Peer Reading Tutors from Year 9 and their reading partners from Year 7, Bennies Book Club students and Mathematics Program Tutors.

The week culminated  with the annual Father Daughter Breakfast. Fathers and daughters were put to the test with a  literacy/numeracy quiz based on facts of refugee and asylum seekers.
