Ex-student Kate Aubusson (Class of 2004) returned to the College

Year 10 recently received a visit from ex-Bennies student Kate Aubusson (Class of 2004) to speak about her 2015 documentary film (A documentary examining how young Australians might understand and connect with the Anzac experience during the centenary of the Gallipoli landings). Kate has worked in a myriad of areas connected with digital and newsprint media since graduating from Macquarie University in International Studies. Her most recent posts have been as a freelance journalist with ABC Television and presently as the Health Editor for the Sydney Morning Herald.

Kate was able to speak to the students about the complex process of planning, proposing, writing, filming and editing a documentary on this iconic Australian historical event. This was an excellent resource for the Year 10 cohort, who are presently in the midst of studying a unit on Documentaries in form, purpose and audience impact. The girls gained first-hand insights into the workings of the journalism industry and also the shifts in focus with the ever-evolving digital society we live in now. Kate's fresh, honest approach and accessible humorous personality made her visit a memorable experience for both staff and students. We thank her for her generosity in the time she gave from a busy professional career and look forward to seeing her in the future.
