Engage and Innovate

Mount St Benedict College is hosting a professional learning opportunity for educators on Tuesday 23 August 2016 to hear Julie Temperley and Keren Caple from Innovation Unit share the latest strategies being utilised in engagement and innovation in schools around the world.

They will focus on student engagement theories, new models of schooling including new ways of measuring learning and assessment and current projects happening worldwide.

Mount St Benedict College, as one of the first Sydney Hub Learning Frontiers schools, has over the last five years worked on a number of engagement and innovation strategies which will be shared by members of the College staff in a number of presentations:

‘The Middle Years Engagement Project at MSB’

What does the Middle Years Engagement Project look like as we come towards the end of its third year and what learnings have we made along the way? A look into the College’s current Year 7-9 middle years work including its integrated subject MYBennies in Year 7, STEM Challenge Days in Year 8 and the upcoming 2017 Year 9 week of experiences.

‘Developing Positive and Engaged Learners’

This session will outline how student wellbeing and learning is being enhanced through the College wide implementation of Positive Education. Including work surrounding the introduction of the following concepts; PERMA, Goal setting, VIA Character strengths, Resilience Doughnut and Solution focused questioning.

‘Authentic Learning through Community Partnerships’

How can partnerships be genuinely beneficial to both partners, relate directly to core learning and contribute to student wellbeing? A case study of authentic engagement integrating service, pastoral care and key learning areas. Leading to enhanced motivation, commitment and deeper understanding.

Following these presentations the College will host a TeachMeet, a format which allows teachers to deliver short sessions about successful practice. The focus is on sharing ideas through short presentations with teachers attending as a participant or a presenter.

Presentations at this TeachMeet will include: STEM, integrated learning, student voice and choice, innovative use of technology, service learning, embedding social justice in school culture, creating a space for meaning making, innovative approaches to particular subject areas, using Teaching for Understanding as a Learning Framework and the role of formation in the development of student engagement.
