Welcome back to the 2020 school year. I want to add a special welcome to all our new students, in Year 7 as well as other year groups, and also to parents who are new to the College community. As the new Principal at Mount St Benedict College I know that together we share the joy that comes with starting something new.

I hope that the holiday break has been relaxing for all our families and you have been able to enjoy time with family and friends despite the challenges of smoke and fire and more recently ice and rain! Our thoughts and prayers are very much with members of the College community who have immediate and extended family who have been affected by the fires over the summer.

At the beginning of each year, we welcome a number of new staff. A full list of our new staff is included in the Deputy Principal, Karen Keogh's section below. For my own part, I look forward to meeting our parents over the course of the first semester at the many College events and activities that start the year. Please come and say hello!

Michael Hanratty
College Principal

I write to officially welcome all families to the 2020 academic year. I offer a special welcome to our new College Principal, Mr Michael Hanratty and to families who are starting their education at the College.

The 2020 academic year commences for students in Years 7,11 and 12 on Tuesday 28 January. The whole school will be in attendance on Wednesday 29 January for College Photo Day.

Throughout the coming year, our College community will reflect on and respond to the values of Pax (peace), Hospitality and Stewardship which are the three core values which guide us in the Catholic, Benedictine tradition. This focus will enable us to reflect seriously on what it means to live according to this rich tradition which is the foundation of our community life.

As we begin 2020, we look forward in anticipation to a number of significant events at the College. On Friday 31 January our community will gather for Eucharist at 9.30am in the College Hall. We look forward to welcoming Bishop Anthony Randazzo who will preside at this liturgy. Parents and family members are very welcome to join us for this occasion.

Welcome back to all our Bennies students and their families! I hope everyone is feeling refreshed after the holidays and optimistic about our journey into 2020. The Pastoral Team has been busy preparing for our students’ return and we are looking forward to seeing their smiling faces and hearing their holiday stories. We extend a special welcome to all our new students. We have a large cohort commencing in Year 7 along with 21 new students in Years 8, 9, 10 and 11. We are so glad you have joined the Mount St Benedict community!

We know that periods of transition can be nerve-wracking and challenging, but they are also opportunities to try new things and to learn about ourselves. Our teaching and support staff will do everything in our power to support a smooth transition into the new school year.

Welcome to 2020.

Last year, we once again had very strong HSC results and congratulations go to the students and teachers for their hard work and endeavour. I want to particularly mention the work of the Heads of Department and the Pastoral Team for their leadership in nurturing learning and wellbeing with the girls along their learning journey. I am indebted to the parents of Year 12 2019 for their support. Please follow the link to a summary of the 2019 HSC results: https://www.msb.nsw.edu.au/about/hsc-results/

Special mention and thank you to the Technologies Faculty under the leadership of Dr Mary Southall in 2019 for their outstanding HSC results. With nine nominations for HSC showcases and 100% of students achieving a Band 5 or 6 in Textiles in Design; 94% for Design and Technology; 83% for Hospitality and Industrial Technology - Multimedia, they are deserving of our gratitude and congratulations.

At MSB, we are continually looking at new ways to improve the quality of learning for our students. We want to ensure our girls learn at their best, have strong connections, feel valued, respected and known, and their learning is interesting and relevant to the life that awaits them after they graduate.

Building on our values and mission, we have developed a range of programs (MYBennies, STEM, Inspire Week and R.E.A.L.) that provide opportunities to develop skills in critical and creative thinking, communication and collaboration, which will build resilience and cultivate curiosity for the world beyond Bennies. In this way, we believe we will be educating young women who can take their place in a future world, with confidence to inspire and the ability to transform themselves and the world.

We warmly welcome Year 9 back to Term One. We look forward working in partnership with parents as we support our Year 9 students to flourish within the Bennies community. Early in the term your daughter will be asked to reflect on her achievements and challenges of 2019, with a view to charting their course through 2020. Part of this journey will include participation in our newly developed Year 9 outdoor residential program, along with the option of involvement in the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme. We look forward to bringing you further details in due course.

We welcome our Year 10 students into the Senior School. As they step into 2020 our Year 10s will have new responsibilities and privileges. One of these is access to the Year 10 Common Room. Students are welcome to store their lunch in the fridge, use the sandwich presses and microwave and make a cup of tea in the lounge (BYO cup). They will also have responsibility for keeping the area tidy!

Year 10s will soon receive communication regarding NESA confirmation, the Senior School assessment policy and HSC Minimum Standard Tests; an important stepping-stone into starting the HSC journey.
